How does a server chiller work?

Generally, a server chiller works by combining tall floors with computer room air conditioning (CRAC) or computer room air conditioners (CRAH). CRAC / CRAH transmits cold air through the inputs of the server and then its components by pressing the space below the upper floors. This cold air exits as hot air and is removed for cooling and recycled to CRAC / CRAH. Some other innovative cooling technologies include:

  • Immersion system: which immerses the hardware in a non-conductive and non-flammable dielectric fluid.
  • Liquid cooler: which exposes the server components directly to the liquid to cool.
  • Direct chip cooling: which directly integrates cold plates with the hardware motherboard for efficient cooling.

Some of the major challenges associated with cooling server rooms include:

  • High power and energy consumption
  • Inefficient use of cooling room space
  • Inefficient operation of the server room chiller due to energy loss due to friction
  • Proximity to cold water sources
