A rooftop package, as its name implies, is a single device mounted on the roof of a building, connected to the building’s air conditioning system to circulate air. This air conditioning package includes items such as:
- Evaporator coil
- Fan
- Compressor
- And condenser
In other words, a rooftop package can be considered as a combination of air conditioner and chiller. Therefore, in line with the specifications of the roof top package, it should be said that a single piece or a unit accommodates two main structures.
They can also be installed on the ground and provide heating according to their performance definition. Unlike splits used in residential buildings, rooftop packages do not have an evaporator fan and coil separate from the condenser and compressor.
How the Rooftop Package System Works
How is the heat removed?
Once the package rooftop is installed, the low-pressure cold gas refrigerant will reach the compressor. The compressor then reaches a refrigerant with a gas phase but high pressure and high temperature and flows to the condenser coil. There, the metal inside the coils absorbs the heat and absorbs it, in other words, dissipates the heat. The condenser fan also directs this heat to the outside of the package building.
In fact, when hot air enters the package rooftop unit, fresh air flows into the duct to enter the building. There are also filters in front of the return air to prevent the entry of pollutants and excess.
How is your refrigeration cycle formed?
The cooling cycle of the package rooftop is as follows
- Cold liquid refrigerant passes through the evaporator coil.
- When the pressure decreases, the liquid refrigerant enters the gas phase.
- As the hot air coming out of the building enters the evaporator coil, the refrigerant removes heat from the air.
- Evaporator fans return cooled air into the building.
- The heated refrigerant, which absorbs the heat, moves back to the compressor to discharge its heat.
- The same cycle is repeated over and over again until the building on which the rooftop package is installed reaches the thermostat settings and meets the need.
Rooftop package filters
The air filter is very important both for the health of the people and the inhabitants of a building and for the health of the package device itself. In any case, the air entering the building that is inhaled by the residents must be different from the outside air, and part of this difference is due to the filtering of the package rooftop. In addition, the entry of fine and coarse particles into the package channels and not cleaning the ducts, makes the need for package repair more numerous and ultimately reduces the useful life of the system.
But there are different filters for a rooftop package:
- Bag filter
- Metal filter and metal pre-filter
- Plate pre-filters
